There are currently more than 60 places available for sociology students per academic year through Erasmus+ and LMUexchange. In addition, students can apply for an LMU-wide place through LMUexchange, which is open to all departments.

Erasmus+

Thanks to the European Union's largest funding program, sociology students can study at one of our 30+ partner universities in other European countries without any major organizational effort.

Erasmus+ exchange places are subject-specific, so applications, applicant selection, and academic advising take place through the Department of Sociology.

We work closely with the International Office, which is responsible for the administrative handling of the program, scholarships, and paperwork.

LMUexchange

LMUexchange makes studying abroad - outside Europe - possible at the LMU. Placements can be subject-specific or interdisciplinary.

Most LMUexchange placements are interdisciplinary. You can apply for a place at 150 non-European partner universities worldwide via the International Office.

Subject-specific placements for sociology students are managed at the Department of Sociology.

Other ways to go abroad

In addition to the traditional Erasmus+ academic exchange program, other partner programs can help you fulfill your dream of studying abroad within Europe.

Foreign credit acceptance

The acceptance of academic credits completed abroad is an important and central component of exchange programs at the Department of Sociology. Our goal is to facilitate credit acceptance and handle differences flexibly.

FAQ

Bachelor:
5th and/or 6th semester

Master:
3rd and/or 4th semester

Sociology courses scheduled for these semesters can usually be easily replaced by comparable courses at the host university and are therefore particularly suitable for credit acceptance.

You can apply for a one or two semester stay abroad at a partner university.

Single semester stays abroad may be extended under certain circumstances.

A maximum stay abroad of 12 months can be funded by Erasmus+ per degree program (i.e., B.A., M.A., PhD). An academic exchange can also be combined with an internship.

Whether your outward journey takes places during the winter or summer semester depends on:

  • Agreements the Department of Sociology has made with partner universities regarding the duration of mobility (usually one semester, sometimes one year). These have been documented in the respective inter-institutional agreements.
  • Your own preference

Please refer to the specific semester dates of the host university for the exact departure period, as these may differ from those of the LMU.

Often, not all of the credits that you will complete abroad can be recognized at the LMU. In these cases, studying abroad for a semester or full year will therefore increase your total semester count compared to if you had remained at the LMU throughout.

It is important that the courses you chose to attend abroad correspond approximately to those that are required at the LMU (in terms of scope and content) for credit acceptance.

It is advisable to prepare the learning agreement carefully and discuss in detail with program coordinators which credits can be accepted.

The question of whether your studies will be extended also depends on how many courses you complete at the host university. You should therefore plan to take an additional course at the LMU in one of the other semesters to “lighten the load” during your semester abroad.

Absolutely!
